Absent: Rhonda Bonnstetter, Sangnyeol Jung, Nadine Schmidt, Jay Brown, Wiji Wijesiri and Marcia Beukelman Agenda Items: Informational Items: Stipulations on mini-grant awards for meals Marcia explained to Betsy that there must be a statement on the grant application that one person should pay for any off campus meals and then file a special expense form. Betsy will talk to Marcia more on this. Action Items: Spring 2013 meeting dates and timesdo Friday meetings, 9:00-10:30am work (No, said some members of the group) or should we look for another time? Monica can send a Doodle survey? First Monica will send an inquiry to possible follow with a Doodle survey. Review of mini-assessment grant funds that were due December 1will be placed on CIA page on t-drive Be prepared for discussion and recommendations: We did not receive any min-assessment grant applications. We will publicize again in the spring semester and emphasize we now have three application dates. Lunch and Learn topics for Spring 2012days and times?? Available dates: February 7th and 21st, March 28th and April 11th. It must be made clear that the Lunch and Learns are open to all on campus; not SmSUFA only. Potential topics: Importance of undergraduate research in retaining students (Jay Brown). Betsy will talk to Jay about scheduling a presentation. Civic engagement: Christine Olson reported a review of trends and what has been going on this past year with three courses with service learning, in the future and more in the future; will have data of what students are gaining from service learning. Need template for analyzing service learning; will walk faculty and staff on how to use; Kris Cleveland wants to explain the Wellness and Human Performance Center and would request the April date. Kris also wants to be a resource for IDST 100 and 400. Scott Ewing is also tracking civic engagement which will be good for cross-referencing data. Could we broaden the topic beyond civic engagement, to do something with maybe leadership, something that gives opportunities to other entities to provide information on that as well? Perhaps; it would demonstrate to other areas the value of presenting, something could lead to others seeing what they could do too, an awareness leading to thinking about collaborative ventures. MSUSSAF is having a professional development day in January, looking at assessment. Lets see what we could organize for sometime after that. Monica will send an email to other office administrators to see if they have topic ideas. Can we do anything to get people ready for the February assessment day? Maybe talk to Programs that have assessment already built in, those with a rich history. Maybe have the Department present it to others, share and highlight what they are already doing that others could model or learn from? There was considerable discussion on how the many aspects of the Undergraduate Research Conference could be reported out to others to inspire others to participate; there is interest among students to do so. We could try using students as resources for assessment. We could check with Brittany Krull regarding Mustang Mentors, what works, how those students could participate. This could be a very good experience for students, they could report their experiences and successes and how it lead to their development. Could the URC be a choice for a concurrent workshop during professional development day? Mike Rich mentioned the possibility of Rotary Club presentations that get very good publicity that would raise public awareness. This would be a great way to focus on students that are doing very well in some area but yet are rarely given enough recognition. Mike Rich added there will possibly be a $1,000 to $2,500 scholarship offered from Rotary to the best of the nine presentations. Monica offered to post the Rotary link on the scholarship page. We could emphasize the upcoming MnSCU Undergraduate Research Conference; we can promote sending our students, as 16 SMSU students participated in the first conference, in April 2012, in Mankato. There is an application process; there is some grant money for student hotel rooms. This is not just for fall semester research; if someone has some good spring research that can be used for the application as well. SMSU would be a good site maybe for spring 2014? Betsy will touch base with Linda Milne of MnSCU. We should all be ambassadors to our areas to explain and discuss what we would like to do across the campus, what we can do. Others? Ongoing Discussion Items: Where to post mini-assessment grant final reports for campus to view? Weve been talking about posting on Program and Department pages; Betsy has touched base with Jake Speer and Jake asks what do people want me to do? Links to scholarships? What kinds of things related to assessment? could Jake place a button on every page for assessment? Why not a tab that points to scholarships linking back to assessment? So many of the Programs are still at square one; how can we make common points with easy access and a common format? A template for assessment on websites? There was lengthy discussion on what could be posted, content that is important, etc. It would be good to create a list of common wants so Jake has something to work with; some direction on what he should create. Jim Tate does shoot video for websites too. Template for final reports for AA, SA, and institutional operations. Linking individual programs student learning outcomes, curriculum map, and assessment plan to CIA page Connecting and communicating assessment activities at all levels: Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, institutional operations. Resources for programs/depts./units regarding posting assessment materials on appropriate webpages: contact Jake Speer for staff/students (e.g., two mentee students) Take away actions: Organize some students to speak on their URC experience and talk about students as resources. How do we get a nice selection of students for February 21st Lunch and Learn. 2/20th is Assessment Day; for examples of what faculty are already doing. Jay Brown at a Professional Development Day in the future? Scotts group maybe in March 28th? Civic Engagement April 11th?
