Absent: Mike Rich, Nadine Schmidt and Michael Cheng. Guest: Will Thomas Informational Items: Welcome back to FY14 school year Action Items: Greetings from President Connie Gores: The President was not able to be with us today but she has asked to be on the agenda at our next meeting. Suggested Fall meeting dates: Oct. 18, Nov. 15, Dec. 20 Appointment schedule of CIA members: We had talked about the two year terms, but to move people onto an odd/even cycle to avoid the whole CIA leaving at the same time. That is a dilemma in that we started with this group just last year, meaning, everyones term will expire at the same time. Betsy is opening this up for discussion. Some leave after this year (year two) while others could serve an extra year to avoid all rotating off at the same time? How do we create a rotation? Who is on the CIA by function? For example, is Alan Matzner on by function? Maybe determine who is by function, noting these people will not leave the CIA. Linda Nelson volunteered to serve a third year which creates the MSUAASF rotation. Rhonda Bonnstetter prefers this be her last year so there will be a call for her position for a 2014-2016 serve, however Rhonda did say she would serve through the 2014 HLC visit. Monica Miller volunteered to serve a third year. Will Thomas suggested that this particular CIA composition serve at least through the October 2014 HLC visit. Sangnyeol will be on sabbatical the spring of 2014 and reported that Stephen Davis will serve in his place. Maybe rotate as Departments rather than individual names? Maybe designate the Departments as even or odd to establish a pattern? That seemed like an acceptable option. It will be considered, for the various Programs within the Business Department, to rotate serving terms because having a representative from each Program would be too cumbersome. Assessment mini-grant cycle for FY13: The message for the grant application has been out; so far just one application has been received. Monica Miller indicated that her group will be submitting an application soon. It was thought Lee French may apply for a mini-grant. One more reminder will be sent to everyone. October 1st is the application deadline. Wait until October 18th for a review and vote or do it through the t-drive? It was decided Betsy will post applications on the t-drive; everyone should review prior to the meeting and then be ready to vote at the October 18th meeting. Priorities for FY14 Review of LEP AHA team products (Will Thomas): Will Thomas reviewed how the teams will be working over a three year cycle with three teams completing their work with a slight overlap with the beginning work of the next three teams. The AHA teams will review the ten LEP Outcomes over time. Diversity, Citizenship and Physical and Social World are the three AHA teams working at this time. Three more will be appointed in the spring of 2014: Creative Thinking, Critical Thinking and Communication. LEP 100, LEP 400, the Core Skills and Information Literacy will be assessed by the LEC. All teams working this year are taking the approach (this being the first year of AHA assessment) to take a range of methods for collecting data and assessments to learn what works and what does not work. This will help with the work of future AHA teams, those in the next round of Outcome evaluations. Will Thomas mentioned the notice of information that was sent to the faculty describing the process for aligning courses with the Outcomes. Will Thomas explained Diversitys work: Wiji said there was a meeting for Physic/Social although he could not attend but they are asking for faculty to report what courses meet the requirements of the Outcome and what data to use; they still need faculty input. Christine Olson reported Citizenship has met and put together a list of meeting dates. They had previously identified courses for this Outcome but are awaiting the results of the recent call to all faculty. Scott Peterson and Christine presented civic engagement at Professional Development Day. The have some new data yet to analyze. They do have some data for LEP 400 on citizenship, it is a qualitative one question on what does civic engagement mean to the student. It was interesting to see the first scan of pre-post; you could see clear differences between student understanding of civic engagement; much more sophisticated and with more efficacy of engagement by the post test. They will continue to use the data; via LEP courses will work with the Office of Student Success to look for themes across the student responses and then do a quantitative measure of change from the pre to the post views of what is civic engage in order to learn if the students move from a one dimensional perspective to multi-dimensional. Still looking at practical logistics to apply and to fine tune the measure of the data. They want to tap into sub-goals too. This is one form of assessment that is pretty doable and they will learn if this will work into the future. Meeting with Chris Hmielewski about having the coaches fill out a questionnaire for every time the student athlete engages in civic engagement, community service. This will help the AHA learn what is going on with the various types of engagement. Do you plan to go to the courses that do not use applied engagement? Yes, there is that idea. This whole exercise is to measure are our students learning what we want them to know, not a measure of who is a good teacher or a bad teacher. A number of student organizations have been contacted, it is believed that each student group submits a yearend report of what they did with their allocated money and we can learn who may have worked in Diversity, Civic Engagement/Citizenship or Physical/Social. Also combing through recent URC to see what independent student work has been done. There will be a strong effort to include Student Affairs and Student Services in the collection of data. The next three teams will be formed around April 2014, move through the various approval processes, to be configured by May of 2014. Will there be an AHA workshop as a paid duty day in May again? Yes, the budget is there at this time. Lunch and Learns possibilities for fall 2013: Change to Munch and Learn? Crunch and Lunch? Does a group need more than an hour and a half? How do we educate everyone that just because it is Noon on a Thursday everyone is welcome, not just for faculty? What about campus conversation time? Information literacy throughout the curriculum? Assessment of student affairs (Crowell) Probably not this semester Review of Civic-minded graduate (CMG) Work of AHA team 10/24th Jay Brown suggested faculty talking about what they do with their research groups? Those engaged in research, not just within the sciences? Sure, check it out. Try this one in November which is before the December URC, December 4th? Discussion of departments/programs/units posting their goals on respective webpages. (Not addressed this meeting). Potential collaboration between CIA and CN committee: Betsy has learned there is not a lot of reporting of CN courses even though there may be assessment going on. There is a CN committee this year and perhaps we should be drawing them in for information; Betsy to explain what we are doing for assessment? How can the CIA help those that need help with CN assessment? We need to ensure that we are doing the same things in CN and the campus course; the assessment would be assessing the same course content. We will need to look at disparities between the CN students and the students in the same course on campus. Betsy will work with Kim Guenther; the chairperson of the committee should be the liaison to the CIA. Upgrading CIA webpage: what should we be posting that will assist faculty and staff in assessment activities? (Not addressed this meeting). Program and Department Annual Reports (Not addressed this time) Template for Program/Dept assessment of student learning to be used for Dept Annual Reports Program Annual Report template (should this be additional requirement from each program?)
